The Elmhurst Music program began 12 years ago with a very small group of students. Under the direction of Helena Moss-Jack, the program has grown over the years to serve 200 students and 7 core instructors. Students take part in beginning, intermediate, and advanced band, small jazz combos, dance, drama, and percussion and choir.
Students receive whole group and private instruction, allowing them to grow as artists. Graduates of the program have gone on to attend Oakland School of the Arts, Bishop O’Dowd High School, and other prestigious secondary schools around the Bay Area.
Each year, the Elmhurst music program gives two public performances, the Winter Concert and Night of Elegance. These concerts allow students to perform publicly in front of their peers and family members.
During the year, Elmhurst music students perform outside of school as well. This year, students performed at the Skyline Jazz Festival, the Bay Area Music in Schools fundraiser, and the Heritage Music Festival in Los Angeles.
For three consecutive years, our students have received funding from the Stanford Jazz Workshop to attend their annual summer Jazz Camp. Other students have received scholarships to participate in the Oakland Public Conservatory of Music and Lafayette Summer Music Jazz Workshops.
Our students have also had the opportunity to work with accomplished musicians. Helena Moss-Jack, our director, has been featured on PBS’s Masters at Work show. Students have also been taught by musicians such as John Handy, John Santos, Kristen Strom, Yosvany Terry, Wayne Wallace, Barry Harris, Donald Harrison, Tami Hall, and Angela Wellman.
Our amazing program cannot go on without the support of people like you.
